hot shots of reggae is an recording on which a bunch of popular reggae songs are brought together. the album was originally released in the autumn of 1970 and compiled by the legendary chinese-jamaican producer leslie kong. he had enjoyed many hits in in europe and selected some of the true pearls from the reggae music to shine on the album. the album includes the maytals hit monkey man, the sparkling so much love by joe white and the fine rythms of ken boothe’s freedom street. the influential producer leslie kong once discovered jimmy cliff and recorded him on his own record label beverley’s. in 1962 he recorded bob marley’s first single and through the 60’s het became known as the producer of many big artists, like desmond dekker and joe higgs. he died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in august 1971.

on an unassuming cassette, just labelled ‘robert rental’ in green dymo tape, these demos have lain unheard for years amongst his family’s treasured possessions, cared-for artefacts of a life cut short far too soon.
these songs, which robert recorded in his council flat in battersea in 1980, provide an enticing glimpse into his all-too-infrequent solo work. on most occasions, robert worked with thomas leer, daniel miller or other collaborators. these are rough recordings, tape hiss still in evidence, but his creativity shines through the murk, like uncut diamonds.

after relocating from california at 7 years old, nasser grew up in a musical environment in new jersey. surrounded by gifted artists from an early age, nasser was fed a diet of authentic 70 s soul, 80 s pop and 90 s hip hop and r&b, which all influenced the spirit of his music and his trademark big production. at only 24 years old nasser displays real musical maturity and a subterranean fearlessness in his productions. mentored by house music master dennis ferrer, nasser has released three ep s and on the indispensible objektivity label, as well as remixing dennis iconic son of raw in 2017. his gramercy ep on suara revealed nasser s more techier side, exposing his wider abilities. his most recent release on objektivity, the just like that ep , dropped in summer 2017, in tune with his first ibiza season. having previously released some rare solo material from ende shneafliet member hanjo erkamp aka dr. c. stein, artificial dance is now serving up something special from the cult dutch minimal wave band’s lesser-known side project, king ende shneafliet. adding king to their name in honour of original dub maestro king tubby, king ende shneafliet produced far more experimental and out-there material than their better-known big brother. they released their first cassette, dimension mix chapter i in 1981 via cult label trumpett, with batches of follow-up material trickling out on various obscure tapes and later cd-rs up to the year 2000. artificial dances first dip into the dimension mix archives a second vinyl volume will follow later in the year features selections from chapter ii (1999), which was originally recorded between 1981 and ’88. the magical, mind-altering music is raw, lo-fi, spaced-out and forward-thinking, combining effects-laden, sample-heavy sound collages and reverberating ambient soundscapes with pulsating proto-electro jams, moody minimal wave instrumentals and kosmiche-influenced throw-downs. it effectively joins the dots between early-80s, diy electronic exploration and dub soundsystem culture.

following hard on the heels of bbe delving into the archives of detroit’s strata records and delivering their widely acclaimed and hugely in-demand exploration of j-jazz, comes another crate digger’s delight- ralph thomas’ ‘eastern standard time’, which dropped the usa back in in 1980, on the obscure zebra jazz imprint.

wow, how time flies. i can’t believe i am putting out record number five already. this release comes from star of the future adam pits. i have known adam for a long time as he was a few years below me at school and then proceeded to go to uni in leeds like i did. he is from the same crew as breaka, and there must be something in the water up there because these guys and the rest of their mates are producing the best shit in town right now. it is a privilege to put out adam’s first piece of wax because these two tunes are dynamite from start to finish. all three tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. they want big sound systems and dark rooms. close your eyes, hold hands and experience transcendental space flight...

considered by many as -the motown of salsa,- fania records is probably the most transcendental label in the history of latin music. by bringing together the eclectic vision of dominican bandleader johnny pacheco with the business savvy of impresario jerry masucci, fania created a sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of american r&b. the label provided an artistic heaven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. the albums recorded by willie colón, héctor lavoe, rubén blades and eddie palmieri from the early 70s to the mid- 80s went beyond the parameters of so-called -salsa- - taking latin music to unsuspected levels of sophistication. when you think latin soul you relate to a mélange of r&b and mambo rhythms intermixed culturally by and for the youth of america. it was 1974, and a brash youngster by the name of ralfi pagan walked into the offices of fania records and demanded to be heard. fania president jerry masucci allowed ralfi that opportunity, and ralfi auditioned for jerry right there in his office. it took only a few moments for masucci to realize that he was in the company of his newest recording artist, he put ralfi in touch with recording director, johnny pacheco, who hurried him into the recording studio for ralfi’s first fania recording session.

inits music has the rare quality of transforming bleakness into a soothing experience. in the duos new ep, wildcard, this mechanism is more intense than ever. and that might be because of the particular circumstances that surrounded its inception. two years ago, nadia dalo and benedikt frey decided to move from darmstadt to berlin. adjusting to a rough area of a big city when coming from a quiet town necessarily brings a change of perspective. for nadia and benedikt, that meant experiencing the city life as outsiders while trying to figure out what they wanted from it.wildcard is the sonic result of this process, and proof that changes always bring growth. recorded in their new home studio during winter, the six tracks on the ep are as haunting as their previous lp for hivern, but with a rawer approach and enhanced power. take cover and solver, an approximation to the kind of moody psych-techno they display in their live-shows and two of the most dance floor oriented tracks init have recorded to date. but its the title track which best expresses the mindset of this work. with its skeletal rattle and undulating synths, wildcard feels as desolate as a berlin street in a winter night, but possesses the kind of focus that turns uncertainty into hope. in a similar way, cuts such as copycat or half baked perfectly capture the sort of estrangement -daunting yet hopeful- that comes when moving into a new place, with its slow tempos mirroring the cautious pace of a foreigner and the intoxicated atmospheres calmly distilling the essence of a new environment. nadia and benedikt describe this new habitat as small kids on big bikes, eating dry instant noodles, playing with whats to find on the streets, static aircraft traffic closely over our heads and constant running engines. listening to the music that arose from it, its obvious that, once again, they&# 39,ve been able to overturn apparently hostile elements into a place were youd want to stay forever

a year after his debut outing on the label, max essa makes a welcome return to hell yeah with the han zon roc ep, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings. essa is of course the long time uk talent who has become a part of the balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like aficionado, music for dreams, and his own jansen jardin. this is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea. opener han zon roc (midori coup) is an epic 12inch minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. they grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. its like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut. how you showed me everything then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing. last of all, rain birds alfalfa jam is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. it s light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of essa works so brilliantly escapist.
